DEMOCRACY NERD: Alaska passes ranked choice voting, w/ SCOTT KENDALL &JONATHAN KREISS-TOMKINS

In 2020, voters in Alaska passed a ranked choice ballot measure by the slimmest of margins. Now, in upcoming state and federal elections, Alaskan voters can vote for all preferred candidates, instead of just one. On this episode of Democracy Nerd, host Jefferson Smith is joined by Alaskan attorney Scott Kendall, one of the initiative's primary authors, and Alaska State Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins to discuss the various obstacles the ranked choice initiative needed to overcome, and how the passing of this initiative could lead to the adoption of ranked choice voting in other states.

We are joined by Alaska's SCOTT KENDALL and JONATHAN KREISS-TOMKINS.

SCOTT KENDALL was the drafter of the initiative of Alaska Ballot measure 2 for Ranked Choice Voting. Scott was a republican lawyer and former gubernatorial chief of staff for Bill Walker 2016-2018
In 2010 Kendall worked to defend Murkowski in the Alaska Supreme Court, which ruled that Murkowski had won the election.

JONATHAN KREISS-TOMKINS represents Sitka and 21 other rural Southeast Alaska communities in the Alaska House of Representatives. His 2014 legislation enshrining Alaska's 20 Native languages as official languages of the State of Alaska attracted national attention. He started thr Alaska Fellows Program, a postgraduate public service fellowship, and Outer Coast, a higher education organization in Sitka.
